The PrestaShop Shopping Cart

PrestaShop is a free open source ecommerce platform that is known for its versatility. It allows online stores to compare payment gateways and use the one best suited to their business needs.

It was founded in 2007 by Igor Schlumberger and Bruno Lévêque who put PrestaShop together out of their desire to make eCommerce more accessible and affordable for small and medium sized businesses. Currently, Prestashop is used by over 250,000 online stores.

This article will help you to compare the best and cheapest payment gateways for use with PrestaShop:

What is PrestaShop?

PrestaShop was designed to make building an online shop quick and easy. It boasts of over 300 built-in features which you’ll get for free when you install the platform. These features will help you manage your product inventory, displays, your checkout process and shipping options.

It also has marketing tools including search engine optimisation (SEO) tools, as well as analytics and reporting features.

To build a PrestaShop site, you simply download and install the PrestaShop platform. Next, you can configure your payment solution and shipping options, before customising your shop to give it a unique look. There are modules you can purchase from PrestaShop that will help you do this.

Choosing A PrestaShop Payment Module

There are hundreds of payment modules and gateways available for shop owners using PrestaShop on their website. However, it can be hard to know which is right for your business. To help you compare payment gateways and understand what to keep an eye out for, we’ve prepared a handy list of key features.

Will It Help Prevent Breakage?

Breakage is the term used to describe tiny inefficiencies on a webpage that may cause potentially converting customers to leave your site without purchasing anything.

Breakage can be caused by poor navigation or on-site elements that slow the site speed. It can also be caused by a payment gateway that isn’t adapted to your ecommerce website.

To minimise the potential of breakage, ensure that your Prestashop payment gateway of choice lets users convert in as few clicks as possible.

Keep an eye out for: How complicated the user interface is and the simplicity of processing a transaction on-site.

Does It Increase Conversions?

An efficient and simple payment gateway will help to increase conversions. Additional features that help to automate online transactions can further boost this positive impact.

Key an eye out for: Features such as ‘auto-ship’ or ‘subscription’ that allow users to automate recurring orders.

How Much Information Needs to be Transferred?

Credit cards transactions are processed on one of three levels: Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. Each requires a different amount of information to complete a payment.

Level 1 requires the least amount of information and Level 3 requires the most. This can impact larger transactions and corporate purchases, so you will need to compare payment gateways to see which one allows for additional information to be requested.

Keep an eye out for: Payment modules that allow extra data to be added to transactions before authorising, e.g. adding a PO Number or Tax Figure.

Is It Efficient?

How self-contained is the payment module? How much administration can you do in the back end?

If you need to log in to third party gateways to issue refunds or void transactions, then this is cutting into time that could be better spent elsewhere.

Keep an eye out for: Payment gateways that allow you to deal with everything in one location.
